Integrated Network of Science and Technology for coping with Emerging and re-emerging Infectious Diseases (RICEI)

riceiInfectious diseases remain a major challenge for human health. There are several aspects of these diseases that remain with an important deficit in scientific knowledge. There is a lack of knowledge about the pathogens themselves, which compromises the understanding of aspects of transmission and epidemiology, whose recent example of great importance is the Zika virus. In many other diseases, there is not enough advanced knowledge to understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the disease, as occurs in the disease caused by the Chikungunya virus, which limits the development of products for its prevention and treatment. There is also an imperative need for a global understanding of the interaction of infectious agents, which implies an understanding of relationships with
a) the environment;
b) with the various animals that interact with man;
c) with other pathogens to which the host has been or is exposed; and
d) the interaction with non-infectious diseases present in the population, as well illustrated by the interaction between tuberculosis and diabetes.
