The transition of the epidemiological profile in Brazil shows an important growth of chronic diseases of non-infectious origin. Among the main causes of mortality are vascular diseases (including cerebrovascular and cardiovascular), cancer, obesity, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. This situation is accompanied by an increase in longevity, which brings up the issue of aging as an important factor in coping with these diseases. Alarming prospects for the coming decades require the urgent development of therapeutic strategies to prevent the progression of these diseases, under penalty of enormous burden on the single health system. At Fiocruz, research and development projects on metabolic diseases are brought together through the translational program Fio-Metabol, and several Laboratories develop research and train graduate students in this field of knowledge. In view of this scenario of significant increase in neurodegeneratives, pathological changes in neurodevelopment and psychiatric diseases, Fiocruz launched the neuroscience translational program (FioNeuro), a network comprising research groups in various units of the Institution, and also includes the association of the Neuroimmunomodulation INCT, coordinated by Fiocruz. In 2015, Fiocruz also created the Translational Thread-Cancer Program, with research groups ranging from basic research to epidemiology, seeking to integrate the different areas of knowledge to achieve their goals by transferring technology, generating new information / technology. In addition to generating knowledge and inputs related to oncology, the Fio-Câncer Network proposes to subsidize human resources training initiatives.
