Integrated Network to cope with Inequalities In Health (RIDES)

ridesHealth inequalities are manifested at different territorial scales, globally and within countries. Coping with it requires international cooperation strategies aimed at graduate education, research and knowledge production in two complementary areas: determination of health-disease processes (epidemiological, social, environmental dimensions); and health policies, systems and services (dimension of the population's health promotion and care policies). The influence of social determination in the illness process starts from the assumption that health is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon, and must be examined through socio-cultural, biological dimensions, among others. In Public Health, historically, biomedical explanations have supplanted social interpretations about the determination of the health / disease process. Although the advances achieved by biomedicine have contributed to a large extent to an increase in life expectancy and improvement of other health indicators, its limit is undeniable in view of the complexity of the current health scenario. The contribution of models that incorporate socio-political and environmental dimensions is also fundamental for understanding and coping with diseases and health problems in contemporary times. In this context, the integrative network for tackling social inequalities in health is based on research that addresses the following axes: epidemiological studies; studies of health determinants, which investigate how social conditions lead to different exposures and, therefore, different health outcomes; analysis of socio-spatial inequalities related to development models, including issues related to social vulnerability and the environment and the impact on health; public policies and health systems, considering their repercussions for supply, the organization of the network, the conditions of access and health care for the population.
